London Underground Sub Surface Railway (SSR) Package 7B

Project outline

The scope of work included the design, system integration, procurement, supply, construction, testing and handover of two 132kv three phase circuits with two fibre optic cables, from UKPN’s Hendon Grid to a new build substation located within London Underground’s Neasden depot.

Key challenges

The main challenges were due to the location of the works, which were primarily within the Brent council area. A number of major open cut trench road crossings were required, including Edgware Road, Kingsbury Road and Forty Lane.

Existing utilities had to be identified and avoided.

Project delivery and innovations

The 5.7km ducted route was installed using a combination of open cut trench and two horizontal directional drillings (HDD).

Before any excavations took place, the entire route was examined using a radar scan in order to pinpoint existing utility services. Trial hole excavations were also carried out ahead of the main trenching works.

The River Brent and Canal Feeder crossings adjacent to Neasden Depot provide significant AEI’s. Two HDD’s were needed to negotiate these intricate crossings. Special consideration was given to the cable system design for the HDD sections. Early in the design process a significant hot point was identified which resulted in an increased cable size being used for the final section from the last joint bay through to Neasden substation.

Specific traffic and pedestrian management plans were put in place and J. Murphy & Sons Limited (Murphy) clearly communicated with all parties – namely Brent and Barnet Council, Transport for London, local residents and business owners.
