Tunnelling

Constructing tunnels of all sizes - from the smallest to the biggest

Our tunnelling clients are drawn from across all areas of infrastructure and all sectors - natural resources (oil and gas), water, power and rail.

We work on all aspects of tunnelling, from beginning to end, incorporating elements of design, engineering, building, digging and maintenance.

As one of the UK’s foremost tunnelling and underground construction specialists, Murphy is ideally placed to manage projects below ground level as well as above. Our extensive range of equipment and substantial investments in modern tunnelling technology means we can be competitive at all levels and are able to work in a wide and diverse range of ground conditions.

Murphy has considerable depth in strength with highly qualified and trained project managers and engineers, and a dedicated long-serving workforce.

Our clients include Crossrail, Network Rail, Thames Water, UK Power Networks and National Grid. Award-winning projects include Farnworth railway tunnel, where we used the biggest tunnel boring machine in the UK, and the Lower Lea Valley cable tunnels project for the Olympic Village, which saw the permanent transformation of the east London skyline. We removed 52 pylons, built a network of tunnels that ran for 13km and installed 200km of power cabling.

Murphy is a member of the British Tunnelling Society, the Pipe Jacking Association and Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA), and we are constantly looking at ways to use innovative methods in work.
