TfL announces Murphy will complete major AFA scheme

Murphy has been awarded an Access for All (AFA) contract by TfL to construct step-free access at four future Elizabeth Line stations on the Great Western Route.

TfL has brought Murphy on board to install lifts and bridges at Hanwell, Iver, Langley and Taplow railway stations in order to increase accessibility for those travelling to and from the Capital.

Murphy will install 11 lifts across the four stations, two twin-span footbridges at Langley and Taplow and a new ticket office at Iver station. All stations will also receive a power upgrade.

Steve Hollingshead, Murphy’s CEO, said: “We’re extremely excited to be working with TfL on a scheme which is of enormous importance in improving accessibility. This project was a key target in our ten-year plan and we feel very passionately about our ability to deliver. With our self-delivery model across power, rail and piling we are well placed to provide world-class infrastructure for passengers along the Great Western Route.”

Work will begin in February 2018 with site surveys taking place at every station. The main works are due to start later in spring at Taplow station.

Murphy has an established legacy of delivering high quality AFA works across the UK and has worked successfully with TfL in the past.

Paul Mohan, Murphy’s rail director, said: “This project has some really interesting and complex engineering aspects to it. We will be excavating down to a Grade II listed subway at Hanwell and managing some very short possessions. We are putting commuters and residents at the heart of this work and will do everything we can to minimise disruption. I’m very pleased with the plans we’ve made and am looking forward to putting these in to action.”

Murphy’s main project office will be at Langley station with satellite offices at the other sites. The work is due for completion in late 2019.
